two key advantages of online learning are flexibility and convenience. it also requires specific computer skills and learning strategies in order to succeed. persistence is perhaps the biggest key to success in online learning. it can also be a drawback for a student who procrastinates, is unable to stick to a routine study schedule, or is not able to complete assignments without daily reminders from a teacher. communication skills are vital in online learning because students must seek help when they need it. many online schools and programs provide several ways for students and/or parents to communicate with teachers and staff. teachers and staff want to help you to succeed in your classes and will answer your questions.
if your teacher has chat room or cell phone office hours, don’t be shy about using those tools to communicate with your teacher. many students are used to a very informal style of writing in chat rooms, blogs, text messages, and so forth. online learners need basic technical skills to succeed. these teach students how to use the school’s learning management system and other online tools, but they typically don’t cover the basics. reading and writing are the main ways you’ll communicate in an online class. although some hard copies of textbooks might be required, you should be comfortable reading a lot of documents on a computer screen and able to type. to be successful, an online student has to want to succeed. or maybe you are seeking a wider range of opportunities available to you with higher education or a higher income.
i developed the study summarized here to provide this perspective and to identify useful strategies that instructors can promote in their online courses. this also presents a potential problem, as procrastination could cause a student to fall behind in the online course. student interaction mostly occurs through an online threaded discussion that allows students and instructors to interact in asynchronous time. another student commented that “applying the new material to what i already knew” was a helpful way to retain the material from the online course.
i was a student that did not have experience in many [online] classes, but the other students did. some students took advantage of opportunities to work with other online students, using the encouragement and feedback they received from that connection to stay motivated (15.8 percent). the participants in this study had the opportunity to share successful techniques and practices that helped them in developing their online student skills through some open-ended questions. students who participated in this study agreed that online discussions with fellow students and the instructor are central to the learning experience. the techniques identified by successful online students can promote a rich learning experience for other students and provide a foundation for them to develop these skills.
